THE "EXTRAS" OF A REIMS - CHAMPAGNE EXCURSION WITH FRANCE TOURISME
City of Coronations, City of Champagne, Reims is eager to reveal the heritage of its glorious history and immerse you in the prestigious world of the most famous and festive of wines.
Masterpiece of Gothic art, one of the major medieval achievements in Europe, remarkable both for its architecture and its statuary. Built in the 13th century, it features traits that make it unique: its exceptional unity of style, its luminosity, and the richness of its statues. Intended to host the coronation of the kings of France. Adorned with 2,303 sculpted motifs, the Reims cathedral is the only church to have angels with unfolded wings, including the famous Smiling Angel, on the left portal of the facade. The famous stained glass windows mostly date from the 13th century. The three stained glass windows of the axial chapel are the work of Marc Chagall (1974). This visit is a must for any history and architecture enthusiast.
During your free time we recommend discovering:
The Gallo-Roman remains, the Forum Square, the Royal Square, the Mars Gate, all must-see monuments of Reims, not to mention the famous biscuit and confectionery house La Maison Fossier, renowned for its "Pink Biscuits".
Immerse yourself in the prestigious world of champagne with a champagne tasting in Reims. These visits and tastings offer the opportunity to taste the best champagnes while discovering the processes that make them so unique and refined. They allow you to savor different champagne vintages and understand the subtleties of their creation. The visit to the champagne cellars in Reims offers a fascinating insight into the secrets of the Champagne method and the captivating history of these cellars, dug into the chalk for centuries.
France Tourisme offers, depending on openings and availability, the visit in English of the Martel Cellars or the Mumm Cellars, two of the most famous Champagne houses.
After a morning of discoveries, it's time to eat. The lunches in Reims offer a variety of gastronomic choices. Our guides are at your disposal to recommend the best restaurants, where you can enjoy local specialties accompanied, of course, by a glass of champagne.
Another must-see attraction is the Verzenay Lighthouse. This unique site offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding vineyards and the city of Reims from its belvedere. The audio-guided tour immerses you in the wine history of the region, followed by a tasting of local champagne.
On the way back to Paris, you will discover the charming village of Hautvillers. This picturesque village is famous for being the place where Dom Pérignon discovered the Champagne method. The ancient Benedictine abbey of Hautvillers is a pilgrimage site for champagne lovers.
